Hand your homepage to a stranger for five seconds. Then ask three questions.
- People spend most of their time on the first screen of a page, and they judge it almost instantly.
- If a first-time visitor can't say what you do, where, and what to tap, the rest of the site doesn't get a chance.
- This test is free, takes five minutes, and tells you exactly what to fix.
of the time people spend looking at a web page is spent on the first screen, before any scrolling.

Why it matters
A separate, widely cited study found people form an opinion of a page's look in about 50 milliseconds. You don't get long.
Owners are the worst judges of their own homepage because they already know what the business does. A stranger doesn't. Claude Hopkins built his whole method on this idea: don't argue about what works, test it on real people and watch.
Do this today
Find three strangers
Anyone who doesn't know your business. A friend of a friend is perfect. Use your phone, since most visitors will.
Show the homepage for five seconds
Open the page, hand it over, count to five, take it back. No explaining first.
Ask the three questions
What does this business do? Where? What would you tap to get started? Write down what they say, word for word.
Steal this script
An answer like that one means your headline isn't doing its job.

The 5-second homepage test
- Show your homepage to a stranger for 5 seconds
- Ask: what do we do, where, what would you tap?
- If they miss any, fix the headline, not the footer
- Headline = what you do + where you do it
- One obvious button. One phone number they can tap
Save it, or send it to the person on your team who should own this.

It's a simple usability test. You show someone a page for five seconds, take it away, and ask what they remember. It reveals whether your main message is landing.
What you do and where you do it, in plain words. For example, "Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Huntington Beach."
Three to five is enough to spot the big problems. Fix what you find, then test again with new people.
